So, I was thinking briefly today that laughter was a bit of a waste, an intellectual no-op, a Little Death of its own. Then I thought about what humor means to me, and it's the juxtaposition of two otherwise unrelated concepts forging a new relation (the punch line) that makes one laugh. It's the a-ha of conceptual synthesis (C. M. Coolidge?) that makes me laugh.

So it's ok.

I hate long plane flights.

I'm still dying.

If I took the amount of time I think about dying from my life, and made a new life, but where I thought about death in this life, I didn't think about death in that life. And where I didn't think about death in this life, I thought about death in that life, well, that life would be thinking about death for the same percentage of its life as this life.

Speaking of travelling consultants, this story on Apple's "switched" site is really pathetic. Let me quote (emphasis mine):

I've been thinking about a Mac for years. Particularly an iBook. I travel a

lot on my job. I'd rather be home with my family, but now I bring my family

with me. Video and digital photographs, right on the computer.

I have four small children who I love dearly. I take lots of digital

photographs and digital video. When I travel--I travel every week--I wanted

something that would let me bring them with me. I just flew to Detroit.

Coming back from Detroit, I was working on editing a digital video. It makes

my day a lot more interesting.

My family lives in California and my parents don't get to travel very much.

So if I can send them a DVD of what my children are doing, of how we spent

our time, it's almost as if they were there with us. And it's fun for me. I

create a lasting memory for my family.
Plus, I get to share with my friends.

I was concerned about compatibility with Word, Excel and Lotus Notes. It

works great.

The common phrase is that kids grow up too fast. I know that 15 years from

now, the investment that I put in now to make these movies is going to seem

like a brilliant use of time. I'm going to have all these amazingly produced

videos and DVDs of the kids growing up.

David Carey

Who cares if I was gone all the time the kids were growing up -- I have video!

(By pathetic, I didn't mean that I had disdain -- only pity.)

I've been in Indianapolis for the past week. I'm not especially loving the travelling consultant lifestyle, especially as "travelling" means "going someplace with no decent food options" in this case. We've eaten so much meat and so little vegetation that we're all feeling hungover and coated with grease. I'll love going home even to the crappy produce of San Francisco. I think I'll eat a watermelon or two while I'm there for the weekend.

I'm also missing Kat and the cats, obviously, and I'm not sure how it's going to work out when I'm working in NY and Kat has moved to DC without the cats. This 21st split-nuclear family stuff is for the birds. And it's only been two weeks!

No luck on getting a travelling adjustment, though. The veep responsible for negotiating with me is flaking out and not returning my emails, and not making himself available by phone. At least I'll get about a hundred thousand frequent flieger miles and an apartment in Manhattan.

I don't think this filename was a coincidence!

I came back from Prague/Rome this week to the news that I'll be working at 100% travel for the next five months. Great! So, I have to find a pet/housesitter in the next three weeks before Kat moves to DC for law school.

Oh, and Prague was great and Rome sucked. I'm thinking about buying a place in Prague and moving there in a few years. I'm thinking I'll never visit Rome again. Especially not during 45-year-record-high temperatures. It's dirty and dusty enough, it's ten times worse when it gets that hot.

I'll have pictures scanned in ere long.
