April, 2004Offshoring is scary!Submitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-25 13:09. | software developmentThanks to the global consciousness that Jung predicted, reified in the modern media and globalhypermegasuperinformationhighway, my attention -- as has, I'm sure, yours -- been frequently drawn to a number of different reactions to the offshoring of primarily information-based jobs. The first-order response is usually terror, because we've all seen the damage done to cities like Flint, Michigan, when other skilled trades crossed the point where they could be done more efficiently, and just as acceptably, overseas. Local economies were destroyed, families were rendered destitute, and the rest of us were subjected to Michael Moore films. Apple == The Ass, or Saved By The BlogsSubmitted by reeses on Fri, 2004-04-23 13:20. | Mac | networksAlong with the rest of the world, I am frequently amazed at the incredible and awe-inspiring incompetence when it comes to Apple QA'ing their software updates. Earlier this week, the Apple Airport 3.4 update came up on SU. Hey, it'll improve output control! I installed it, and discovered the reception meter dropped by a little bit. No big deal, it all still worked. When I got home today, everything worked fine for about an hour, then pfft. The signal meter registered a signal, but I couldn't obtain a DHCP lease. I configured the host/gw addresses, to no avail. OmniGroup claims that OmniGraffle Pro can import and export Visio documents. 'Great,' I think, Visio documents are one of the huge pains about being a Mac person. I hate asking people to send PDFs or to print things out for me, or worse, having to wait for Virtual PC to start up just so I can view a file. I finally broke down and went to the Omni site to buy OGPro, when I noticed a "Trial License". Fantastic! I only need it for one file right now, and I figure I can buy it next time. I download the software, add the license, and joyously go to open up the Visio doc. Mac OS X appsSubmitted by reeses on Mon, 2004-04-19 23:12. | MacIn a fit of me-tooness, I created a quick list of the Mac OS X applications upon which I depend. New PowerBooksSubmitted by reeses on Mon, 2004-04-19 13:17. | MacI'm looking at the new 15" PowerBooks wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade. I bought this one last August, and it appears that the only gain possible for me is about 20% faster CPU (1.5Ghz G4 vs 1.25Ghz), and a faster 3d GPU with more RAM. (128M 9700 instead of the 64M 9600 this box has.) Then, I'd spend a week copying everything over and getting my applications and settings cloned, and that's about it. Then, I could sell my current Powerbook for $2k or so, and deal with the hassle of shipping, etc. Bye-bye bloggerSubmitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-18 21:29.I got tired of blogger, so I installed phpwiki and wrote more php code than I ever have in my entire life to migrate here. I'll be moving everything over in the near future, but in the meantime, stuff lives in two places. C'est dur, la vie. TeraTerm Pro IE Launch ModificationSubmitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-18 13:43. | windowsI found myself doing a lot of "select, copy, open IE, paste into address bar" with TeraTerm Pro, so I added a menu item to take the current selection, and open IE with the selected text as the target. I didn't add anything fancy like url-recognition a` la gnometerm, eterm, etc, and it does absolutely no data validation. Anyway, download the diff here. It works fine with the fantastic TTSSH, and builds semi-cleanly in MSVC 6.0, with a few warnings at /W4. I don't know if it is kosher to distribute a binary, so if you are the author, let me know if I need to yank it. MiniMTASubmitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-18 13:41.MiniMTA (tar) is a very small Java class that will relay messages via SMTP. This was developed for use on my SGI/IRIX box, because gcc doesn't play well with native libraries. It works for me, but it might not for you. imgsrc (source) is a tiny program that takes a filename as input, and stuffs an <img src="foo" width="bar" height="baz"> tag string into the Windows Clipboard. It will pull the width and height out of most gif, pcx, png, and jpeg files. The bmp format was too gross to do in one sitting, so I left it out. You shouldn't be putting bmp files on your website, anyway. systrayal takes a command string as an argument, and hides in the systray. When you left-click on the icon in the tray, or right-click and choose the appropriate menu item, it executes the command. I use it to start my browser up and go to the sites I visit most, with "systrayal start http://www.foo.com".
I've installed and bodged phpwiki to migrate my site & blog over. Expect a moderate step backwards until everything is tuned and migrated. I previewed things in Safari and Firefox on the Mac, and the layout looks OKish for now. If it doesn't work on IE, please, hesitate to let me know, because I'm really not that interested. Edit: This is meta because this blog no longer exists. Should I have migrated it? :-) Gotta pimp some links: UntitledSubmitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-11 21:32.I've been monitoring the local grocery stores for kosher-for-Passover Coke for the past couple months, ever since the Passover displays started. I gave up on it today, as the supply has been almost completely exhausted. We grabbed a couple pints of ice cream and a couple 2l bottles of Coke from the regular aisle, and came home. It wasn't until Kat said,"What does this Hebrew on the cap say?" several hours later that I discovered the hidden bounty. I should have said,"Oh, that says,'Poison To Goyim,'" but I'm not the quickest wit. UntitledSubmitted by reeses on Sun, 2004-04-11 17:19.I'd like Tom Clancy a lot more if his novels were as short and dense as this hypothetical Chinese invasion scenario. UntitledSubmitted by reeses on Fri, 2004-04-09 21:53.We just got back from putting Pix to sleep. The "pushing herself around" status from earlier this week was a huge exaggeration, and she actually hadn't improved at all since last Friday. I held her while the doctor injected her. The moment she died, she just relaxed and went limp against me. She felt completely different after the tension left her body. Even her ears felt strange. She didn't close her eyes, which was really tough to take. All of us were crying uncontrollably, even the doctor. We had fought really hard and tried everything possible, but the tumor fucked us in the end.
