My secret illiterate shame

Submitted by reeses on Wed, 2007-01-31 10:02. |

I happened upon an article about a guy making a poster of covers of all the books he has read. He mentioned how he built the list, using LibraryThing and the "suggestions" to jog his memory.

I decided to do the same thing (not the poster, just the list) and started entering books I remembered. Yes, I was sure I had read more than 750, by at least a factor of two. No, I didn't bother entering all of them because the site's interface stinks rather a lot, with a popup to confirm that you want to add the book for which you just clicked "add to my library".

How to know when it's too early to upgrade your software

Hint, it's best to wait for a point release when the upgrade instructions consist of "It's probably best to upgrade to 4.7 before upgrading to 5.0. You should disable your contributed modules and themes first. You should not upgrade it in place because the directory structure has changed. Oh yeah, and for more detail, watch this videocast of mumbling quietly through the installation while typing in a transparent terminal."

Lamest. Teaser. Ever.

For those of you at work, it's a very unsuspenseful,"Coming up on Mythbusters, can we fold this piece of paper...more than seven times?"

Portable/personal media players?

Any of you have a recommendation for a Mac-friendly non-iPod video capable portable media players that handle video? I'm disqualifying the iPod for now as its codec support is pretty minimal. Otherwise, it has almost everything I'm looking for.

Other than that, I'm looking at the Creative Zen Vision W, which looks great on "paper" but is ugly and doesn't love the Mac. In fact, the only way to get it to work with a Mac is to use xnjb, an open source MTP application. Suck. That's so far from iTunes integration that it makes my head spin.

Fiero Enzo

(Yes, I love kit cars. They're like bad folk music.)

This one comes by way of ebay, as do a number of these monstrosities. The description claims that it's a Lamborghini kit, but it's more clearly an attempt to replicate a Ferrari Enzo, or Enzo Ferrari, or whatever.

Rooting to stop prostitution

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Sydney municipal officials have paid private detectives thousands of dollars to have sex with prostitutes to gather evidence needed to shut down illegal brothels, an Australian newspaper reported Sunday.

Nine local councils have paid private investigators the equivalent of C$23,150 over the last three years to go undercover and root out the illicit trade...

So, this is an ad for a gender-reassignment clinic?

"Oh look, I have tiny hormone boobs and no more pee-pee!"
