DVD/VCR price inversion

It looks as if we've recently crossed the point at which the new technology (DVD) has supplanted the old technology (VCR) such that the focus of manufacturing (and subsequent economies of scale) has finally shifted to the new technology. You'll be familiar with this process if you have shopped for a record player (er, turntable) in the past fifteen years or so, having seen the prices increase as the prices for CD players decreased.

As with record players, I expect that VCRs will be available only at thrift stores or as a choice between the few $150 models available from one or two vendors still in the market. Non-DVHS VCRs being inherently lo-fi, you're not going to see a Clearaudio Master Reference VHS VCR in the future.
