This is what four thousand dollars sounds like

The Silver Apple's Death SongPicture the old days with lap-belts in cars, when you'd drive down the street with the buckle bouncing along because you closed it in the door. Back slowly down your concrete driveway, mosey through your neighborhood, get on the freeway where it really starts whanging against the bottom of your car, pull off an exit, drive through a school zone, find an abandoned lot, do some brodies in gravel, turn around and head back home, and you'll have a good idea of the dying drive gestalt, complete with emotional mortification. Anyway, enjoy the music above, and know that it's not the worst part of the sequence. soundrec.exe seems limited to 30 seconds, and that's before it sounds really nasty, with one of the heads dragging itself across one of the platters. Also, turn up the volume, because iPod earphones are just as bad as microphones, but I saw them in a tangled mess near my desk, and they were forced into service. It made for nice timing, though. I bought SuperDuper to make a bootable mirror of my internal drive a few weeks ago, although a mount volume weirdness before I went to SF means my regular data is two weeks old. Fortunately, I was a little skeptical, and kept using my rsync-and-cron gum-and-baling-wire nightly backup of /Users/reeses, and that is up to date. Honestly, the only thing I think I might have lost is SuperDuper itself. :-) What this means is that:
The first part is ok/so-so because of the Intel-based PowerBooks in 2006Q2 "announcement", but OK because Kat's student discount will save me a few hundred bucks. Also, it'll be higher res, and new, and not as dog-slow as this PowerBook has gotten. Of course, I hate having to spend money, and that's what this is. I'm a little annoyed, though, because had I known I'd be buying a new PowerBook when I bought my LCD, I would have bought the 30" instead. I know, life's rough. Post new comment |
